C. Eugene Ruhlen


ST. MARYS — Gene Ruhlen, age 84, of St. Marys, formerly of Mendon, passed away at 3:30 A.M. on April 30, at his home, with his loving family present.

He was born Jan. 25, 1930 in the old Lima City Hospital in Lima. The oldest child and only son of C.V. & Viola Neubrecht Ruhlen. Gene grew up on a farm south of Lima. He attended Lima Perry Schools and graduated from Lima Shawnee High School with the class of 1949. On Aug. 20, 1949, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was trained as an airplane engine mechanic stationed at Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. His air transport group, carried the wounded from Japan to the States. He received an honorable discharge on Jan. 29, 1953.

Gene worked at Nameplate In Spencerville, The Lima News, The Lima Citizen and Petro-Chemical. He retired from the Citizens Commercial Bank of Celina in 1990, after 26 years of service. He had been on the Mendon Board of Public Affairs and financial secretary of the Mendon United Methodist Church. While at The Lima News, he met the love of his life … Marilyn Miller, and they were married on Dec. 20, 1953. They celebrated 60 years of marriage on Dec. 20, 2013, with all of their family present. They lived 47 years on South Main Street in Mendon. In 2011, they moved to Otterbein, St. Marys.

Gene loved to hunt, fish, ride motorcycles, and be outside. After retiring, he enjoyed auctions and antiquing. He collected antique tobacco items and fishing lures. He also crafted meticulously detailed miniatures of local homes and buildings. He was a loving family man who enjoyed every minute spent with his kids and grandkids, and was so proud of all of their accomplishments and achievements.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn, and their 3 Children. Son: Dr. Michael & Cathy Ruhlen of Charlotte, NC, Daughter: Lisa & Bob Moeller of Chickasaw, Daughter: Terri & Scott Shutt of Lima, 7 Grandchildren: Chris & Cathy Ruhlen of Kensington, Md., Jenny & Todd Bruns of Celina, Tara Ruhlen of Charlotte, Kelly & Ben Rude of Huntersville, N.C., Ben & Sara Moeller of Coldwater, and Emily Shutt and Sam Shutt, both of Lima, 9 Great Grandchildren: Anna, Casey & Keira Ruhlen of Washington, DC, Nichola, Rachel, and Adam Moeller of Coldwater, and Cole, Hope, & Joy Bruns of Celina, a Sister: Erma Jane & Larry Hawkins of Elida, a Sister-in-law: Barbara Miller of Coshocton, and 2 Nieces and 2 Nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Parents-in-law: Dwight M. & Joanna H. Miller and his Brother-in-law: Jack Miller. He was a member of Mendon United Methodist Church and a life member of Spencerville V.F.W. Post #6772.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 3, at the Mendon United Methodist Church, with Pastor Don Clinger, officiating.

Burial will follow at Mendon Cemetery, with graveside military rites to be conducted by the Spencerville V.F.W. Honor Guard.

Calling Hours are from 2:00 - 7:00 P.M., Friday, May 2, and an hour prior to services on Saturday, AT THE CHURCH.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Grand Lake Hospice or the Mendon United Methodist Church Sanctuary Fund.
