ELIDA — Calvin M. "Cal" Leimbach, 90, was called into the presence of the Lord Tuesday, March 24, 2014 at 7:40 p.m. at his residence.
He was born January 2, 1924 in Huron to the late Milton and Ruth (Kneisel) Leimbach. On June 30, 1951 he married his beloved wife of 62 years, Doris (Prowant) Leimbach.
Cal graduated from Berlin Heights High School in 1941. He was attending The Ohio State University, when in April 1943 his studies were interrupted to enlist in the United States Army, where he served a 2 ½ year tour of duty in WWII's European Theater. He was wounded in combat shortly before the end of hostilities in Europe, receiving a purple heart. After a lengthy recovery he returned to Ohio State University and completed his undergraduate work in 1947, and later his Master's. His family farm background in Erie County laid the foundation for his career and service to Allen County's agricultural community. Cal's commitment to vocational agriculture, 4-H, and ag- extension work spanned a 36 year career in the county.
Cal served as Agriculture Extension Agent for Allen County from 1951 - 1982 and an Adjunct professor of agriculture at Ohio State. He was dedicated to serving his community, having served on the American Township Zoning commission, Allen County Soil and Water Conservation, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Lima Allen County Regional Planning Council, Lima Kiwanis Club, Marimor Industries Board, Allen County Agriculture Society, and the Allen County Fair Board. In August of 2013 Cal was recognized as an inaugural member of the Allen County Agricultural Hall of Fame. He was an active member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for 55 years.
Cal and Doris were blessed with 5 children, Bruce Leimbach, of Brice, Nanette (Lou) Taylor, of Pickerington, Jeffrey (Linda) Leimbach, of Cincinnati, Gary (Pam) Leimbach, of Columbus, and Kim (Patti) Leimbach, of Marion; 17 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren; other survivors include, brother-in-law, Robert Hetrick, of Fremont, and sisters-in-law, Eileen Southerland, of Waynesfield, and Bonnie (Ed) Berthold, of Mt. Pleasant, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Hetrick .
Services will begin 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Immaunel United Methodist Church, 699 Sunnydale, Elida, OH 45807. Pastor Bruce Hamblin will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida. Military rites will be provided by the United States Army.
Friends may call from 2:00 – 4:00 & 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2014 at CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
