LIMA — James "Mike" Mekolites, 91, passed away at 2:20 p.m. March 28, 2014 in Delaware, Ohio.
He was born on August 10, 1922, in Pound, Virginia to Stanley & Alma Page Mekolites, who have preceded him in death. In October of 1945, he married Mary Jean Overholtz, who passed away on December 28, 2011.
For the past 40 years Mike lived in Syracuse, NY, where he was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying salmon fishing with his beloved black lab Susie. He also loved to work in his vegetable gardens. Mike enjoyed watching birds, feeding them and the squirrels. He had worked as a general contractor and high risk painter. He loved to share the stories of the places he traveled and the things he had painted over the years. He was a diehard Ohio State University Buckeye fan and loved the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians. He will be remembered as an animal lover, who was always working for others.
Survivors include his seven children, Jim & Susan Mekolites, of Elida, Tom Mekolites, of Lima, Bob Mekolites, of Lima, Bill Mekolites, of Bradenton, FL, Tim Mekolites, of Lima, Linda & Mark Warren, of Delaware, and Ron Mekolites, of Lima; eight grandchildren, Jeff, Tiffany, Chantea, Rebecca, Betty, William, Sara, and Logan; and seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Joe & Randa Mekolites and Creed Mekolites.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Mekolites; a grandson, Joseph; three brothers, Otto, John, and Stanley; and a sister, Alma Keysor.
Services will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL.Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima.
