LIMA — Joe C. Fassett, age 83, passed away on November 6, 2013. He was born in 1930 to Mary and Guise Fassett of Findlay, Ohio. He is predeceased by his sister, Margaret Edwards. He graduated from Findlay High School. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the 1948 State Championship basketball team. Joe graduated from Denison University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After college he returned to Findlay to join the Fassett Lumber Company, Buckeye Ready Cut Homes, and Lumbertown Inc. He was also associated with the Tasty Tater Potato Chip Company. Joe was a member of BPOE #75 where he was elected Exalted Ruler at a very young age. He was active with The Boy Scouts, Findlay Rotary Club, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity Board of Trustees, and was an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Findlay.
In 1950 Joe married his wife of 63 years, Ann Rees, of Findlay.
In 1963 Joe moved to Lima, where he became a Stockbroker and Vice President with McDonald & Company, eventually becoming the Managing Partner in the Lima office. In Lima, Joe resumed his Elks and Rotary Club affiliations, becoming a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary Foundation member and President of the Lima Rotary Club. For many years, he served as a Board Member and President of: Lima Memorial Hospital, The Lima YMCA Board of Trustees, and the Lima Convalescent Home Board of Directors. Joe served on the YMCA Board of Trustees for over 30 years and was the recipient of the prestigious Triangle of Honor Award. He was a long-time member of Shawnee Country Club.
Joe worked with the Lima Community Foundation, the United Way, the Lima Symphony Orchestra and many other civic organizations. He was an Elder of the Market Street Presbyterian Church and served for years as an MSPC Fund Trustee. Joe changed firms to become a Vice President and Managing Partner with Merrill Lynch and when the Lima office closed, became a Vice President of Investments with A.G. Edwards & Sons. He retired in 2004.
In 1983, along with his wife, Ann, Joe founded the Equestrian Therapy Program at Fassett Farm providing therapeutic horseback riding to the disabled in our area. He also served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer.
Joe's greatest joys came from his family and his beloved Treasure Cay. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Ann Rees Fassett, and his daughters: Julie (Ed) Malmstrom of Bonita Springs, FL; Jill (Bob) Prugar of Louisville, KY; Peg (Rob) Athanas of Bonita Springs, FL; Betsi (Charles) Dahan of Potomac, MD. Joe was a loving Grandfather to: Tim (Karaugh) Prugar, Chris (Caroline) Prugar, Cassie Prugar, Tyler Malmstrom, Joel Dahan, Daniel Dahan and Amy Dahan who will all greatly miss the benefit of his wit and wisdom.
Visitation will be on Friday, November 8th from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Shawnee Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 9th at 10:30 am at Market Street Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow immediately at Woodlawn Cemetery.
