William Snider


MENDON — William N. Snider, age 70, of Mendon, passed away Thursday, February 27th at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Born October 1, 1943 in Celina, he was the son of Lyle and Esther (Webb) Snider. His mother preceded him in death, and his father survives in Mendon.

Bill married Caral G. Welker on August 29, 1964, and she survives in Mendon. Also surviving are their 2 sons: Kelly (Amy) Snider of Englewood and Jeff Snider of Mendon, and 4 grandchildren: Matthew, Michael, Zachary and Mark Snider. Also surviving are a brother: Gary (Joan) Snider of Celina, a sister: Brenda (Eugene) Hicks of Mendon, a brother-in-law: Eric (Bonita) Welker of Mendon and 2 sisters-in-law: June (Gordon) Gingrich of Grand Haven, MI and Jane Amstutz of Florida.

Preceding him in death was a son: Mark D. Snider, who died in 1998, and his parents-in-law: Lowell and Eleanor Welker.

Bill was a 1961 graduate of Mendon Union High School. He had worked at Teledyne Ohio Steel in Lima for 24 1/2 years, and Trim Trends in Spencerville. He retired from the Village of Mendon, after working for 10 years as the Utilities Superintendent. Bill was currently serving as Mayor of the Village, and had been President of the Town Council for several years, and also served on the Board of Public Affairs. At the age of 25, Bill was the youngest Fire Chief in the State of Ohio, a position he held for 28 years. Bill served with the Mendon Union Fire Department for a total of 50 years, and was also a volunteer with the Mendon EMS for 15 years. He was a member of Mendon United Methodist Church, and had served as Church Treasurer. Bill was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA). He was a Gun Collector, and enjoyed Hunting and Trapshooting. He was a Trustee for the Mercer County Sportsmen's Association. He also collected Model Trains.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, March 3rd at Mendon United Methodist Church, with Rev. Donald Clinger officiating. Burial will follow at Mendon Cemetery. A meal will be held following the services at the church.

Visitation will be from 2 - 4 & 6 - 8:00 P.M on Saturday, March 1st and an Hour before time of services on Monday at Mendon United Methodist Church .

In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested for The Sanctuary Fund at Mendon United Methodist Church.
