VAUGHNSVILLE — Donald L. Hughes, 95, died at 2:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
He was born November 12, 1918, in Vaughnsville, to Henry and Cora (Barto) Hughes who preceded him in death.
On October 18, 1939, Donald married Alice J. Schafer, who survives in Vaughnsville. They had recently been honored as the longest married couple in the State of Ohio for 2014 by World Wide Marriage Encounter.
Donald is survived by his children: Donald Hughes of Ottawa, Kathie (Tom) Selhorst of Columbus Grove, Mike Hughes of Vaughnsville and Pam (Jim) Maag of Ottawa. Nine grandchildren who brightened his day whenever they were together; 15 great grandchildren and five great- great grandchildren, with more on the way.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jason Hughes; a great granddaughter, Claire Wrasman; one brother, Vernon "Colt" Hughes and three sisters Bettie Brinkman, Mary Baringer and JoAnn Rode.
Mr. Hughes was a WWII veteran of the United States Army, and he participated in D-Day at Normandy. He was awarded two Purple Hearts along with other medals and honors for his service. He was a member of the Lima VFW Post 1275, and Past Commander of the K of P Lodge, Vaughnsville. He was a member of the Vaughnsville Community Church.
Don retired from Westinghouse in Lima where he worked 38 years. He loved playing cards, watching sports, especially The Ohio State Buckeyes, and anything that involved his grandkids.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 15, 2014 at HARTMAN SONS FUNERAL HOME, Columbus Grove with Pastors Tom Brown and Gary Rode co-officiating. Burial will follow in Vaughnsville Cemetery, with military rites by the Lima VFW Post 1275.
Friends may call from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday February 14, 2014 at the funeral home.
