CONTINENTAL — August 1939 - December 2013. Douglas Parker Geary, Doug, as most people called him, was raised in Van Wert, OH where he grew up on Keplar Street. He attended Franklin Elementary School and graduated with the class of 1957 from Van Wert High School. He was a fine musician and an accomplished journalist. Doug was a veteran of two tours in the United States Navy as a yeoman.

Doug wanted to join the Navy and I was already stationed in Memphis, TN. My Mom came to Memphis to see me off to California enroute to Okinawa, Doug came with her and we rode my 1954 Harley74 to Los Angels, CA where Doug took a bus to San Diego, CA to enlist and I went on to Treasure Island awaiting air transport to the Orient. It was a great adventure.

Doug was a fun loving adventurer that loved to be needed and would give the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. I remember when Doug met me in San Jose, CA with one of our hometown friends working there and made a trip to an all you can eat restaurant. Evidently these three musty steers, as we fancied ourselves, ate more than we should and were denied dessert. From there we wound up at Coit Tower with Doug and Stan playing ukuleles and a crowed gathered. We got enough coins to get us back to San Jose.

Doug was always quick to help a person, when I had my hip replaced he chauffeured my wife around to get us to the clinic, the pharmacy and to therapy. He would come by every morning with a cup of coffee for each of us. He monitored and forwarded our mail when we asked him. He was an all-around good friend, good cook and listener. He had an uncanny recall of people and places. Doug will be missed by many. -Written by William M. Wheeler, his lifelong friend.

Doug leaves behind his wife, Mary Jo and his two cats: Winky and Curly.
