JOHN LEAHY

ELIDA — John M. Leahy, 74, passed away at 7:42 p.m. November 23, 2013 at St. Rita's Medical Center. He was born on August 12, 1939, in Tiffin, to John M. & Dorothy F. Slattery Leahy, who have preceded him in death. On June 24, 1967, he married Jane A. Caldwell, who survives.

In 1957, he graduated from Calvert High School in Tiffin. He then graduated in 1961, with a Bachelors of Science degree from John Carroll University. John then entered the United States Army, serving from October 1961 until being honorably discharged in September 1963. In 1966, he graduated from The Ohio State University, Moritz College of Law, with his Juris Doctorate Degree. Since 1966, he has worked as an attorney with the same law firm, which is currently the office of Balyeat, Leahy, Daley, and Miller, LLC. He was also an assistant prosecuting attorney for Allen County from 1966-1976 in the Criminal Division, and from 1981-2005, as Chief of the Civil Division.

His professional memberships included: the Allen County Bar Association, serving as President in 1992; the Ohio State Bar Association, on which he was a member of the Board of Governors from 1997-2000, a member of the Council of Delegates, a member of Real Property Law Section, and a member of the Health Law Committee; the Society of Ohio Hospital Attorneys; the American Health Lawyers Association; and the National District Attorneys Association.

In addition, he was a member of the St. Rita's Health Care Foundation, which he served on the Board of Directors; the Lima Symphony Orchestra, which he served as Vice President and was a Member of the Board; the Knights of Columbus; and the Benevolent and Protective Orders of Elks. His professional activities included: Chairperson of the Allen County Bar Association Certified Grievance Committee, from January 2008-December 2009; member of St. Rita's Medical Center, Ethics Committee; and member of St. Rita's Medical Center, Institutional Review Board.

John was a member of St. Gerard Church. He enjoyed boating and valued time spent with family at Indian Lake. John was also an avid OSU Buckeyes fan and had not missed a game at the Shoe in 40 years.

Survivors also include a daughter, Deborah A. & Doug Fissel, of Powell; two sons, William J. Leahy and John M. & Cathy Leahy, both of Lima; two grandchildren, Sarah Fissel and Ryan Fissel; and three brothers, William & Dawn Leahy, of Springfield, and Thomas & Irene Leahy and Walter & Joan Leahy, both of Columbus. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Sean Leahy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2013 at St. Gerard Catholic Church. Father Jim Szoboyna will officiate. Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at CHILES - LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL. A private interment service will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery, Lima.
