LIMA — Merle E. Brown, age 94, of Lima, died Friday, January 3, 2014 in Dalhart, TX.

He was born August 8, 1919 in Roundhead Township, Ohio to Oliver E. and Estella Pratt Brown. Both parents, his sister Violet Rex, his two brothers, Robert Layton and Gerald Layton, and a great grandson, Jett Aaron Brown, all preceded him in death. On January 23, 1944 he married Alice Ann Plaugher who also preceded him in death on October 4, 2002.

Merle graduated from Shawnee High School and entered the Army during World War II. He was awarded a purple heart for his service during the invasion of Germany. After leaving the service he was a Machine Operator for Clark Equipment for 42 years. During that time, he also farmed and was active in the local Farm Bureau. He was a lifetime member of the Westminster United Methodist Church.

Merle is survived by a son, Noel V. Brown and his wife Betsy, of Dalhart, Texas; a daughter, Beth L. Ball and her husband Bob, of Jefferson, New Hampshire; two grandchildren, Matthew and Jennifer Brown; and a niece, Amy Mullen and her husband Mike of Lima.

Private family services will be held with the Rev. Charlotte Hefner officiating. Burial will be at Salem Cemetery, Westminster.

Arrangements are by Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville.
