CRIDERSVILLE — Richard J. Buehler, 94, passed away at 5:10 p.m. January 27, 2014 at the Ohio State University Ross Heart Hospital, Columbus. He was born on July 23, 1919, in Detroit, Michigan to Mr. & Mrs. Rupert J. Buehler, who have preceded him in death. Richard attended the University of Detroit and Wayne State University, playing football at both schools. He joined the National Guard in 1937, entering into the Army in 1941. He proudly served as a Captain during World War II. On June 6, 1949, he married Mary Patricia Lillis, who survives.
Dick retired from Excello in 1981; he then continued to work with Pat in the Interior Design Business for 40 years. He was an avid bowler and golfer, who was also a loyal Ohio State University and Cincinnati Reds fan. Dick enjoyed watching the games. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks, and the Shawnee Country Club. Dick was famous among his friends and family for his firm, unforgettable handshake, and he still had that firm grip on his last day.
Survivors also include two daughters from a previous marriage, Carol Ann Flynn & Dan Bynum, of Troy, MI and Donna & Robert Heilman, of Macomb, MI; two sons, Richard & Nancy Buehler, of Newark and James & Debra Buehler, of Lima; 10 grandchildren, Kevin & Roxanne Flynn, Keith & Donna Flynn, Krista & Mark VanSlambrook, Dawn Heilman, Kelly & Todd Powell, Shannon Buehler, Brandon & Allison Buehler, Lauren & Bret Woodyard, Craig Buehler, and RJ Buehler; and 10 great-grandchildren, Tiffany Flynn, Jamie Flynn, Matt Flynn, Samantha Flynn, Kelsey Flynn, Christian Flynn, Michaela VanSlambrook, Conor VanSlambrook, Logan Buehler, and Regan Woodyard.
A Memorial Mass will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Military Rites will be given by the VFW Post 1275 and the United States Army Honor Guard following Mass. A private family entombment of his cremated remains will take place at a later date in Gethsemani Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL, where a parish wake service will begin at 8 p.m.
During his last week at Ross Heart Hospital, Richard had requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his granddaughter, Allison Lee Buehler.
