Clyde Mefferd

LIMA — Clyde Nelson Mefferd, 94, died at 12:40 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at St. Rita's Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 12, 1919, in Rockford, to Charles L. and Daisy E. (Miller) Mefferd, who preceded him in death. On July 11, 1945, he married the love of his life, Marion Lucille Gilmore, who preceded him in death on Aug. 31, 2012, after 67 wonderful years of marriage.

Clyde was a graduate of Ohio City High School. He proudly served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Air Forces from 1942 to 1945. He was an active member of St. Gerard Catholic Church since 1953, serving in many capacities. Mr. Mefferd was a life member of the VFW Post No. 1275, and Eagles Aeries No. 370. In 1981, he retired as an electrician from the Standard Oil Lima Refinery, and was a member of the Quarter Century Club at the refinery. Clyde and his wife enjoyed wood working, refinishing furniture together, and traveling with their friends. Clyde was an avid sports fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, University of Dayton Flyers, and Cincinnati Reds. His true passion in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and great grandchildren. The entire Mefferd family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Otterbein Cridersville for the the care and attention given to both Clyde and Marion.

Clyde and Marion were blessed with nine children, Alan B. (Cindy A.) Mefferd, of Lima, Lois A. (Danny W.) Smalley, of Loveland, David P. (Karen S.) Mefferd, of Lima, Daniel C. Mefferd, who preceded them in death, Carol L. (Harold W. Jr.) Steinke, of Kettering, Kevin R. (Cindy A.) Mefferd, of Lima, Maria J. (James T.) Black, of Troy, Keith C. (Teresa L.) Mefferd, of Dayton, and Steven E. (Jennifer L.) Mefferd, of Wapakoneta; 17 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ruth (James) Wiechart, of Elida, and Phyllis (Richard) Howland, of Kettering; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were five brothers, Harry, Arthur, John, Wilbur, and Walter Mefferd.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gerard Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Gethsemani Cemetery. Military rites will be presented by VFW No. 1275 and the United States Army.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Shawnee Chapel. A parish wake will be held at 8 p.m.
