LIMA — Daniel L. "Dan" Spence, 73, died at 2:15 p.m. Nov. 6, 2013, at his residence.
He was born April 25, 1940, in Deshler to Samuel O. and Mabel J. Pfouts Spence, who preceded him in death. On July 6, 1985, he married Sheila Woods, who survives in Lima.
Mr. Spence was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 370, the National Rifle Association and Gold Wing Motorcycle Club. He had been a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He retired from Elida school district and had served as a police officer in Elida and with the Allen County Sheriff's Office. He was an avid woodworker, hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed making maple syrup, apple butter and kettle corn. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially having the annual hog roast. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who will be deeply missed. He will also be missed by his faithful pets, Lady and Precious.
Survivors also include six children, Lisa (Jim) Kirk, Sherri (Dave) Blackston, Daniel J. Spence, Dale Harris, Jeri Lynn (Chuck) Ferguson, and Richard Harris; 21 grandchildren, Jim, Justin, David, Corey, Jason, Zachery, Jordan, Joe, Matt, Matthew, Jacob, Kaylynn, Angie, Alicia, Jessica, JoAnne, Jerica, Alexis, Sara, Cassy and Shelby; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, M. Leona Wien; three brothers, Jerry (Jan) Spence, Arven (Emma) Spence and Al (Bert) Spence; and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and great-great-nieces and -nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Lee Spence; and a brother, Samuel E. Spence.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Cridersville. The Rev. James Couser will officiate.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Shawnee Chapel, and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
