LIMA — George E. Scheckelhoff, 86, died at 2:04 a.m. Sunday, December 1, 2013 at Springview Manor Nursing Home.
George was born September 27, 1927 in Lima to Herman and Lucille Moyer Scheckelhoff who preceded him in death. He was raised by his loving aunt Hazel M. Moyer. On April 24, 1943 he married Betty J. Hume who survives in Lima.
Mr. Scheckelhoff served with the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII as a Fireman First Class. He was a graduate of Lima Central High School, Northwestern School of Commerce, and Ohio Northern University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration in 1972 and a Bachelor of Science degree, also in business administration in 2006. George was a member of Delta Mu Delta, National Honor Society in Business Administration and Phi Kappa Phi, Honor Society. In 1985 he retired as an operations planning coordinator from Standard Oil of Ohio (SOHIO)/ BP. He had also been employed at Lima Locomotive Works.
George was a member of First Evangelical & Reformed Church. Other memberships include B.P O E #54, Eagles Lodge # 370, and American Legion Post # 96. He was a 17 year volunteer with the The Red Cross where he served as a board member. He also was a 17 year volunteer and a life member of the Lima Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. In addition he was a Literary Council member, a tutor at St. Charles School, a member of the Lima Jaycees, a Deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Evangelical & Reformed Church and a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher and President of Consistory at Calvary Evangelical and Reformed Church.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of Springview Manor Nursing Home for the tender loving care provided to George.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, George R. (Patti) Scheckelhoff of Monroeville, special 2nd son, Steve Breitigam, a daughter, Sandra S. (Randy) Ritchie of Wapakoneta; grandchildren, Brian ( Katherine) Ritchie, Steve Ritchie, Lindsay (Eric) Hammett, William (Sarah) Nickle, Adam (Tevan) Nickle, and Gavin Nickle; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Evangelical & Reformed Church, 320 W. Wayne St., Lima. Rev. Edward Rinehart will officiate. Entombment will be at Memorial Park Mausoleum with military rites by V.F.W. #1275.
Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 Wednesday at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL.
