CRIDERSVILLE — Paul M. Basinger, age 88, died on February 22, 2014 at 6:32 A.M. at Otterbein, Cridersville.

He was born August 13, 1925 in Columbus Grove to Murrel and Alice Mason Basinger, who preceded him in death. On July 15, 1944, he married Shirley L. Dukes, who preceded him in death on September 12, 2013.

Mr. Basinger enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1944. He graduated in 1943 from Columbus Grove High School and later graduated from DeVry Technical Institute for Industrial Electronics. He retired from Ford Motor Company as an electrician in 1986 after 29 years. Mr. Basinger was a member of 1219 Retirees and life member and past commander of Lima Power Squadron.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church from 1952 until it closed and he then transferred to Forest Park United Methodist Church.

Mr. Basinger took many cruises into Michigan and Ohio River with the Squadron. He enjoyed family boat trips from his dock at Marblehead on Lake Erie to New York World's Fair by way of the Erie barge canal and to Expo in Montreal by way of the St. Lawrence River. He enjoyed watching Nascar and Ohio State football, traveling, spending summers on Lake Erie and winters in Florida in their motor home for many years.

Family will remember him as an accomplished "jack of all trades" and his willingness to help stranded motorists or boaters.

Survivors include a daughter Pamela K. (Daniel) Miller and a son, Kevin P. (Melita) Basinger of Lima; three granddaughters, Kristina (Ed) Burden, Kimberly Sandy and Ashley (Richard) Kissling; five great grandchildren, Erik and Lillyan Burden, Allison Sandy, Colton and Layla Kissling, all of Lima, and sister-in-law, Dolores Basinger of Marion.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Basinger, sister and brother-in-law, Ruth (Len) Steffen.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26, at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Pastor Timothy Benjamin will officiate. Burial will be in Harmon Cemetery, Gilboa. Military rites will be done by United States Air Force and Ottawa American Legion and VFW joint color guard.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army or Forest Park United Methodist Church.
