LIMA — Mary M. Compton, 89, passed away April 14, 2014, at 3:12 pm, at her home surrounded by her loving family. They take comfort in the fact that she gave her heart to Jesus before she passed. Mary was born May 16, 1924 in Spencerville to Francis and Emily Thompson Rhodes who preceded her in death. On December 27, 1948 she married Richard M. Compton who preceded her in death on April 3, 1994.
She enjoyed playing Bingo and playing cards with her family. She loved being outdoors with her children and grandchildren, swinging on her back porch. Each summer she looked forward to going to the Allen County Fair. In the early 1970's she began working at the Eagles and retired one month shy of her 80th birthday. Prior to the Eagles, she worked at the Downtown Kewpee during the time of its turntable.
Survivors include: 12 children, Orville Compton of Lima, Karen (Danny) Wireman of Lima, Bonnie Stauffer of Lima, Doris (Tim) Stevenson of Harrod, Tina (Marcus) Lori of Lima, Dixie Hahn of Lima, Betty Lou Holbrook of Lima, Jerry Compton of Lima, Donna Jean Overholser of Sidney, Gladys (Russ) Lawrence of Lima, Larry Joe Compton Jr. of Lima, and Judy (Marion) Bowers of Lima; one daughter-in-law, Ann Compton of Lima; 57 grandchildren; 111 great-grandchildren; 69 great-great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-great-granddaughter.
Preceded in death by: 2 sons, Robert and Francis Dwayne Compton, two daughters-in-law, Phyllis and Lois Compton; 2 sons-in-law, Ed Hahn and Guss Holbrook; 3 great-grandchildren; one brother, George Rhodes; and three sisters, Ann Courtney, Carolyn "June" Gossard, and Helen Burden.
Services will be held Friday, April 18, 2014 at 11:00 am at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services - Shawnee Chapel. Pastor Dave Coffey to officiate the service. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.
Friends may call Thursday, April 17, 2014 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services - Shawnee Chapel and one hour prior to the services Friday at the funeral home.
