JAMES 'JIM' BOROFF
FOUNTAIN INN, SC — James William "Jim" Boroff passed away on November 7, 2016, due to complications from Alzheimer's. He was born on September 14, 1934, to the late Max and Lucille Boroff of Lima, Ohio. He was a devoted son, husband, father, Gampa, and friend. Jim graduated from Elida High School in 1952. He joined the navy after graduation and served for four years in Jacksonville and Reykjavik, Iceland. He then went to Furman University where he played football and baseball and graduated in 1960. He met Fredda Dean Wood while he was at Furman, and they married on May 31, 1958. Jim was employed by Milliken after his graduation and continued working there until he and Fredda purchased the Fred H. Wood Oil Company from Fredda's father in 1976 and owned until Jim retired in 2004. Many remember his presence at the different gas stations in Fountain Inn and often referred to Jim as their "oil man."
Jim is remembered for his passion for youth sports, Furman football, and golf. Jim embraced the town of Fountain Inn as his new home, and he joined Fredda in developing Fountain Inn's Recreation Department. He served as a little league coach, and he continued his dedication to young athletes as an integral member of Hillcrest High's Booster Club in the 1980's. Jim volunteered many hours of his time to ensure that young people had the opportunity to participate in team sports and hone their athletic skills. Jim loved his years at Furman, and he was active in the Purple Pounders and the Furman Football Players Association. He was a regular at Furman football games, and only when his health began declining did he stop attending. Golf was Jim's other passion, and he was a longtime member of Fox Run Country Club. He relished his time on the links and valued the friendships that formed through the bond of golf.
Jim is survived by his three children, Bill Boroff, Kristi Boroff Ferguson, and Stan Boroff and his wife, Connie. Gampa loved his grandchildren dearly: Grey, Brennan, and Alex Boroff, Bennett and Jacob Ferguson, and Chloe and Davis Boroff. He is also survived by his sister, Thelma Hawk, his niece, Becky Hollinger, and his nephews, Randy Landes, Gary Landes, and Doug Hawk. His beloved wife Fredda Dean, predeceased him on May 20, 2016. He was also predeceased by his sister, Pat Klingler.

Prayers and thoughts go out to the Boroff family. Jim and Fredda were a fabulous team, always generous and happy to help out. Always positive even when things didn't go Furman's way on the field. They will be greatly missed but we'll remember them every Fall when we gather together to pull for the Paladins, in our thoughts and always in our hearts.
