James L. "Jim" Richards passed away peacefully at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis on December 31, 2018 at the age of 78. Born to John E. ("Hi") Richards and Ceola (Creech) Richards on January 12, 1940 in St. Louis, MO, Jim was raised in rural Troy, MO by his parents and maternal grandparents Allie and Kate (Sweeney) Creech, attended Buchanan High in Troy and starred in basketball and baseball, graduating in 1958. He attended Moberly Junior College briefly on a basketball scholarship, married Patricia Woolfolk, had a son Brian and worked in the construction trade, helping to build many of the neighborhoods of North St. Louis County in the 1960's. When possible, Jim pursued his lifelong passion for hunting and fishing.
Jim later lived in Fairfax, VA, helping to build the Washington, DC subway system, married Jackie Cudd and had a son Jason and a daughter Jenise. For 40 years, he and his companion Virginia Berkholz resided in Florida, St. Louis, Boonville and the Lake of the Ozarks. Jim operated a home remodeling business for many years before retiring to focus on hunting, fishing and an impressive list of personal home improvement projects.
Jim is survived by sons Brian (Gail) Richards of Kansas City, MO and Jason (Mandee) Richards of
Ogden, UT and a daughter Jenise Clark of Layton, UT, grandchildren Alison (Josh) Prentice of Kansas City, MO, Michael Richards of San Jose, CA , Evan Richards of Chicago, IL, Austin, Ethan, Bailee, Zoee and Roxee Richards, all of Ogden, UT and Bridger Clark of Layton, UT and great grandchildren Aidan, Emmaline and Charlotte Prentice, all of Kansas City, MO. He is also survived by cousins Mike (Regina) Creech and John Creech. Jim was preceded in death by parents John "Hi" and Ceola Richards and grandparents John and Floy Richards and grandparents Allie and Kate Creech.
He leaves behind friends in the Berkholz family, particularly Peggy, her daughter Teresa (Kevin) Holmes and grandchildren Erica Ryan and Stephanie Berkholz and the families of Ed and John Berkholz. He also leaves behind a number of friends and fishing buddies who can now catch a few more fish. Jim was a smart and resourceful man with a taste for the simple and the solitary.
