John E. "Scotty" Scott

BLUE MOUND, IL - John E. "Scotty" Scott, 97, passed away at 10:00 p.m., Friday Oct. 4, 2013, at McKinley Court Nursing Home in Decatur, Ill.

A service to celebrate Scotty's life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home in Blue Mound, Ill., with Rev. Robert C. Clark and Rev. Ellen Moma co-officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Old Stonington Cemetery, Stonington, Ill.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to DOVE, 788 E. Clay St., Decatur, IL 62521 or Camp Walter Scott, 15290 E. 300th, Dieterich, IL 62424.

Scotty was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Pekin, Ill., the son of Harry M. and Florence (Rees) Scott. He was raised and graduated from Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Ill. He married Iva Linxwiler on May 8, 1938. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2000.

Scotty was the owner and operator of Scotty's Supermarket which began in 1945 until 1969 in Blue Mound. In 1976 he went on to own and operate Scotty's Front Porch Ice Cream Shop. He also formerly worked as a leading Electrolux Salesman having sold 2,234 units for the company.

Scotty was a WWII Navy Veteran and a member of the Blue Mound Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Blue Mound for over sixty- eight years having served as a trustee, deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher for the youth. He served on the Blue Mound Fire Department as a volunteer fireman and as a trustee. He was a charter member of the Blue Mound Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellowship member and twice past president of the Rotary Club. He was active in the Food Panty in Blue Mound. Scotty also was instrumental with Ray and Nancy Jo Batman in starting DOVE and had served on the board for many years. He had a passion for music. Scotty had strong core values and beliefs in hard work, trust and quality in everything you do.

Surviving are his daughter, Jane Scott Beck of Normal, Ill.; son, David J. Scott (wife, Betty) of Decatur; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Scotty was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Nancy Jo Batman, one brother and one sister.
