Ruth Anderson Jurjevich

LINCOLN, IL - Ruth Anderson Jurjevich, 100, died Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at 4:45 p.m. at St. Clara's Manor, Lincoln, Ill. Ruth was born Ruth Alfild Anderson to Henning and Alma Anderson on Feb. 24, 1913, on a farm near Kenney. After obtaining her Associates degree from Lincoln College, Ruth began her teaching career. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse for a year before moving on to Chestnut School for ten years. After marrying Stephen Jurjevich on June 13, 1943, and giving birth to daughter, Kathryn, Ruth returned to teaching at Lincoln Development Center as part of a research project sponsored by the University of Illinois, where she remained for 26 years.

Following the death of husband, Steve, in 1995, Ruth spent many years visiting classrooms in the Lincoln school system, where she became known to youngsters as "Mrs. J., the Art Lady."

Ruth was an active member of the Women's Club of Lincoln, the Retired Teachers of Logan and Dewitt, Beta Sigma Phi, and the Jolly Seniors.

Ruth was preceded in death by husband, Steve, and siblings, Elizabeth and Rudy Anderson. She is survived by daughter, Kathy Rose, son-in-law, Bill Steinmetz, and innumerable people who came to rely on Ruth as friend and confidente over many years.

Services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Lincoln, Ill., with Rev. Rachel Stockle officiating. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 9, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Lincoln. In lieu of flowers, Ruth asks that donations be sent to United Methodist Church of Chestnut.
