Elza "Leroy" Gass

MT. PULASKI, IL - Elza "Leroy" Gass, 93, formerly of Niantic, Ill., passed away at 7:15 a.m., July 30, 2014, at Vonderlieth Living Center, Mt. Pulaski.

Leroy was born Aug. 26, 1920, in Dawson, Ill., the son of Elza Edward and Mary Ann Sullivan Gass. He married Hope Pritchett May 1943. She preceded him in death in 2009.

Leroy is survived by one daughter, Linda Burke of Decatur, and one sister, Betty Bragg of Decatur. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Norman, Virgil, Lester, and Herbert Gass; sisters, Martha, Doris, Lois, Thelma; and one grandson, Craig Burke.

Leroy graduated from Niantic High School in 1939. He played with the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League from 1939-1941 and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. Elza worked at Staleys in Decatur for 41 years. He served on the Niantic Volunteer Fire Department for 33 years and was Fire Chief for 15 years. He had served on the Niantic Village Board for 20 years--eight as Village Board Trustee and 12 as Mayor of Niantic. He was also baseball manager for Niantic Little League for many years.

Services for Leroy will be at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2014, at United Methodist Church, Niantic, Ill., with Rev. C.W. Reneker officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Long Point Cemetery, Niantic with Military Rites accorded. Memorials may be given to Niantic Fire Department or United Methodist Church of Niantic.
