THOMAS HAINES Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 29 to Jun. 30, 2017.
Thomas Davies Haines, age 79, died June 17th in New York City following complications from pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his wife Stephany and his two sons, Sam and Thomas. Known to his friends as Tom, he will be remembered by many as a consummate gentleman and for his kindness, patience, and eagerness to help others in need. Born in 1937, Tom was raised in New York City, together with older sister Minxie and younger brother Alex. He attended St. Bernard's School in New York City and St. Paul's School in Concord, NH before matriculating at Yale University. At Yale, he studied history and was an early member of the Mace & Chain senior society, which he later helped to revitalize in the 1990s. After graduating from Yale, he served in the Army Intelligence Corp. before marrying Stephany Warick in 1962, whom he met while she was attending Vassar. Tom worked most of his career as a personal investment counselor in New York City at Spenser Trask, Manufacturers Hanover, and Scudder Stevens & Clark, where he enjoyed forming deep relationships with his clients and servicing the needs of their estates and trusts. He and Stephany, his wife of nearly 55 years, raised their family in Brooklyn Heights and enjoyed spending weekends and summers in Norfolk, CT. Tom was an avid golfer who also delighted in spending summer evenings fishing for trout and bass in the lakes near their Norfolk house. After retiring, he and Stephany moved to Salisbury CT where they became active members of the St. John's Episcopal Church community and enjoyed spending time with friends, reading history books, and traveling to some of their favorite locations in England, the British Virgin Islands and the Adirondacks. Throughout his life, animals brought him considerable joy. Both he and Stephany liked to say that they had replaced sons with Jack Russell Terriers, and were devoted servants to their now deceased dogs, Jigger, Maggie, Rumpus and Skirmish. He remained a long-suffering fan of the Yale Football team, attending several games a season for many decades, and was always eager to entertain a $1 wager with an alumnus of any team on Yale's schedule. His laughter, generosity and whimsical sartorial sense will be remembered by all who were touched by his endearing personality and spirit. Tom is survived by his wife Stephany, his brother Alex, his sons Sam (and wife Monamie) and Thomas (and wife Callie), and his four grandchildren (Kailash, Urmila, Sophie and Eliza). His family will be holding a private funeral service and expects to celebrate his life at a memorial service in Salisbury, CT later in the summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his honor to the Church of the Transfiguration, PO Box 369, Norfolk, CT 06058. Kenny Funeral Home 41 Main St. Sharon has care of arrangements.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to your family during this difficult time. I hope the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring much comfort. Just knowking that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
