About South Dakota

South Dakota is a state in the Midwest that is bordered by six states: Montana and Wyoming on the west, North Dakota on the north, Minnesota and Iowa on the east and Nebraska on the south. The state is known for a popular tourist site, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The sculpture in granite features the likenesses of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. Mount Rushmore is part of the Black Hills, the highest mountains east of the Rockies. Settlement of the state increased greatly in the late 19th century thanks in large part to the construction of the railroads. The discovery of gold in the Black Hills prompted a gold rush, bringing more people to the state.
