About Tennessee

Tennessee holds a unique location in the southeastern United States, touching the borders of more neighboring states—eight—than almost any other state in the nation. Its shape is defined in part by two of America’s most prominent geographical features, the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. Music plays a huge role in Tennessee’s major cities: Nashville is the home of the country music industry, while Memphis helped birth American musical genres as blues, gospel and soul. Famous Tennessee residents have included frontiersman Davy Crockett; singers Aretha Franklin, Bessie Smith, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, and Justin Timberlake; and former Vice President Al Gore.
