Fletcher, Orvell K.
Community leader Orvell Kenneth "O.K." Fletcher passed away in Sacramento on April 11, 2015, at the age of 99. He was known for his kindness, generosity with time and advice, strong principles and sense of fairness, as well as his lively stories, harmonica playing and homemade olives. He was never afraid to stand up for what he believed was right and was always ready to help those in need. Born on Feb. 2, 1916, in Dallas, South Dakota, Orvell arrived in California's Central Valley in 1927 with his parents and four siblings seeking opportunity. He worked his way through the College of the Pacific and began his career teaching English, Speech and Social Studies at Lodi High School, his alma mater, in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, and in 1943 Orvell married Helen Howard, his wife of 61 years. In the education field, Orvell rose to become the superintendent of the Galt High School District from 1954 to 1978, credited with modernizing the structure of the city's schools. He went on to serve on the Galt City Council in the 1980s and 90s, including a stint as vice mayor. Since his college days he was also a prolific and accomplished furniture maker. Orvell was a leader in community service, playing a founding role in the Galt Lions Club and the Galt Historical Society, was a longtime member of the Galt United Methodist Church, and most recently a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, where he was active until his death. Well into his 90s he remained a committed, effective adviser and advocate for education affairs in Galt. Orvell is survived by his children Virginia Klenk (Ted) of Ventura, William Fletcher (Joyce) of Lusby, Maryland, and Wendy Porter (Jim) of Petaluma, as well as his seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His wife Helen passed away in 2004, and he was predeceased by his siblings Harold, Orlo, Leona and Charles. He also leaves behind his "other daughter" Sylvia Warner and numerous nieces and nephews. The family gratefully acknowledges caregivers Mercy Hernandez, Benrus Pascual and others at Wavecrest Villa in Sacramento, his home for the past two years. There will be two memorial services held for Orvell, the first on Sunday, April 26, at 1 p.m. at the Faith Presbyterian Church, 625 Florin Rd. in Sacramento. The second service will be held Monday, April 27 at 12 noon at Horizon Community Church in Galt, Rev. Judy Robbins of Galt United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Galt Cemetery in a private family service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Orvell Fletcher Memorial Fund, c/o Kathleen S. Amos, Attorney at Law, 206 5th St. Suite 2B, Galt, CA 95632. Donations in his name could also be made to the Galt Methodist Church, the Galt Historical Society or your favorite charity.
