Carl E. De Ment was born in Stockton, CA to parents Carl Alexander and Lyle Atchinson De Ment. He passed away in Crescent City, CA at the age of 83, after a short illness. Carl graduated from Stockton College, renamed Edison High School in Stockton in 1948. In 1951, he joined the US Army
and served 2 years, stationed in France as a member of the Military Police and further served 8 years in the Army Reserve forces till his discharge in 1960. During his reserve years he attended Cal Poly and earned his degree in horticulture that served him well in his chosen profession as a master gardener. Carl was the proud owner of the De Ment & Sons Nursery for 30 years in Stockton, CA, where he was also an active member of the Native Sons. He moved to Lodi, CA in 1990 where he established a successful landscape and gardening business known as "The Green Thumb". Carl was known for his extraordinary gardening ability producing the most beautiful flowering landscapes.
In 1995, he and his wife Peggy retired and moved to Brookings, OR where he was involved in the Garden Society and helped maintain Azalea Park as a volunteer for many years. He pursued his passion for personal farming, renting land from a friend and planting large vegetable gardens every year. It was in Brookings that deep sea fishing also became a passion which he enjoyed for about 10 years. Carl was very creative and was accomplished in designing and making stain glass objects of art. He was an inquisitive man and self taught in many subjects. Carl enjoyed exploring computers; he was not a web browser but interested in how and what made the computer think. He destroyed only a few computers, beyond repair, before he found out what he wanted to know. Carl was curious and intelligent, and always busy trying new things; whether it was plant propagation, creating new hybrid dahlias for fun or parasailing in Mexico.
Lastly, Carl was a man who loved life and his friends; those friends from Seaview, his last residence, brought him a great sense of community and enjoyment. On, lets not forget the man also loved to dance; especially like to do the "chicken dance" with anyone he could get to do it with him! He met his wife dancing and he loved her everyday till his death. Carl was loyal and always trustworthy. Seeing and hearing from his children and grandchildren always brought him the greatest pleasure.
Carl is survived by his wife of 32 years, Peggy De Ment; he is also survived by his sons Randall (Laura) De Ment; Rodney (Leah) De Ment and Ryan De Ment. Grandchildren Harrison, Lucas, Mekenzie & Natasha De Ment, brother Bob De Ment. Additionally, he survived by his step daughter Sandra Fischer, step grandchildren Boyd (Gretchen) Lachance; Jocelyn (John) Boyle, Alec Fisher and 7 great grandchildren. He will be missed and remembered by all for the joy and love he brought to their lives.
A private service and interment will be held in Lodi, CA.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel.
