Frank Charles "Smokey" Heisler, age 90, went to the Lord from his home in Lodi, on Monday, August 26, 2013. Family was by his side.
Born December 20, 1922, in Linton, North Dakota, to immigrant farmers Magdalena and Nicholas Heisler, he moved to Lodi with family in 1929. Frank graduated from Lodi High School in 1940, where he was on the swim and dive teams. He served in the south Pacific during WWII
, for the U.S. Navy
on the USS President Adams (APA-19) until 1945. His combat service in Guadalcanal; Solomon Islands; Rendova; Bougain-ville; and Iwo Jima left an indelible impression on him throughout his life. In 1947, he married Lorraine (Francis) Heisler and the two remained inseparable until her death in 2006. Frank worked for Clancy Pump & Supply and later Goehring Pump & Irrigation Co. installing and maintaining pump systems for local farmers. He retired in 1985. He was a long-time member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Lodi; a twenty year member and 3rd Degree of Knights of Columbus; and fifty-five year member of American Legion Post 22. An avid fisherman, Frank enjoyed weekend camping and fishing trips with family. Frank was a highly skilled craftsman, building his own home on the family property. His hobbies included woodworking, lapidary, gardening, and bird-watching. Later in life, Frank looked forward to mornings with his "Breakfast Club" buddies at McDonalds, sitting outside with his faithful dog, Poncho, watching people pass by his home, and occasional trips to Jackson Rancheria. Strong on the exterior, Frank had a gentle soul. He will be especially remembered for his dry sense of humor, and the tenaciousness that allowed him to persevere through life.
Survivors include daughters Cheri Evans (Richard) of Lodi and Lynn Heisler of Sacramento; grandchildren, Joshua Heisler, Amber Dutto (Daniel), and Todd Evans (Robyn); two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his loving wife, Lorraine, Frank was preceded in death by his parents, eight siblings, a nephew and niece. Special thanks to Visiting Angel's caregivers, Rhonnie and Cheryl for going the extra mile and their compassionate care.
