LaNora "Sam" Eva Steinhagen Clemings, 70, of Lodi, passed away at her home surrounded by her family, following a brief bout with cancer.
She was born in Davenport, IA, on August 23, 1943. She was the youngest child born to Arnold and Eva Steinhagen. The family moved to Warren, OH in 1944 where she was raised.
After graduating from high school, LaNora relocated to California and resided in the coastal towns of Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. It was shortly thereafter she secured a position as a telephone operator in Lodi, with PT&T, later Pacific Bell. She married Bill Clemings on January 7, 1968 where they made Lodi their home.
LaNora's career spanned 33 years with Pacific Bell. Although her concentration remained in the Operator Services Department, she had several responsibilities through the years and was eventually promoted to Area Manager for offices centering around the Stockton and Sacramento area. After a brief assignment in San Ramon, she made the decision to separate from the company to focus on retirement and her grandchildren.
Volunteering was a big part of her life. LaNora belonged to several volunteer organizations such as Sultana/Flame Tokay, DeMolay and Job's Daughters. She also assisted with the Elk's Lodge events, donated to the Veteran's home and numerous other service organizations. Her largest dedication of time, support and love was with the Telephone Pioneers of America. The Pioneers afforded LaNora many opportunities to contribute. She worked with the Waldon School Children, Special Olympics, the 1984 Olympic Torch Run, fingerprinting for child safety, blind baseball and blind skiing events and the Lodi Street Fair, just to name a few. Another gift from the Pioneers was the wonderful friends she had made and loved for many, many years.
LaNora enjoyed traveling and visited 49 of the 50 United States as well as cruises and travelling abroad. During their vacations, while her husband may have had the boisterous ability to initiate conversation; LaNora cemented the foundation of those friendships through frequent letters, cards and phone calls, as well as visits.
