LaVeta Marie Adams was born LaVeta Martin on October 10, 1929 to Sarah Emma and James Martin of Pittsburg, Missouri in their rural farmhouse with a local mid-wife. She grew up on the farm with her younger brother, James Orlin Martin. She attended the Pittsburg local grade school, and later, Hermitage High School where she played on the women's basketball team.
LaVeta moved to San Francisco when she was 18 and married her husband, Jay Adams, at age 21 in 1950. They moved from San Francisco to Sacramento where she worked at McClellan Air Force Base for the Commanding General. They later moved back to San Francisco when her husband Jay was promoted to a position with Chesapeake Shoe Company as Vice President of Sales.
LaVeta worked for four years at General Motors
Corporation in San Francisco before going to work at Chesapeake Shoe Company, where she also worked four years.
After her son Jerry was born in 1957 LaVeta began a distinguished career as a stay at home Mom. After her daughter Jana was born, the family was complete and moved to Clayton, CA. She volunteered with school activities, cub scouts, blue birds, little league, church, and family activities.
In 1972 the family moved to a 20- acre ranch in Lockeford to have horses at home. She loved the ranch life with many pets, and especially her beloved cats and chickens. She enjoyed all the ranch chores (well most anyway), and also enjoyed buying trips with the shoe store with her husband Jay and daughter Jana to New York, Spain and other areas. Her true joy was always just being at home with her husband and kids.
Later in the mid-70's LaVeta assisted with bookkeeping at Jay's World of Shoe's, the family business in Stockton. In the early 90's, Jay and LaVeta moved to Lodi where they lived until Jay's passing in June of 2011.
LaVeta was a doting grandmother and loved her grandchildren Brandon and Scott Spinner and Kara and Cody Adams. She loved hearing about all their adventures and seeing them grow and mature. They were the light of her later years.
LaVeta is survived by her son, Jerry Adams with his wife Cindy, and their children Kara and Cody, her daughter Jana Spinner and her sons Brandon and Scott. Also, her brother James Martin with her sister-in-law Rayona, their children Timothy and Jeffery, and their families.
Honoring LaVeta's request, there will be a private gathering of immediate family for a rememberance at a later time.
She would have wanted that you remember to give your kids and grandkids a hug, from a mom and grandmother that loved giving them herself.
