Raymond Jacob Berg of Stockton, California passed away on Feb. 7, 2013 at the age of 83. He was born in McLaughlin, South Dakota on March 22, 1929 to George Berg and Pauline Werner.
Ray's family moved to Lodi in 1932 when Ray was three. He was raised with his seven brothers and sisters in Lodi and attended Live Oak Elementary School and graduated from Lodi High School, class of 1947. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Dollarhide, in 1949. They loved to dance and were active in square dancing for over 25 years. They were avid campers for over 50 years and loved trips to Kennedy Meadows. While raising their family, they were active at Emanuel Lutheran Church as Youth Sponsors and Ray served as President of the Church Council. Ray belonged to Kiwani's Club, the Elks and Moose Lodges, and was active at the Ambler's Club in Stockton. He enjoyed playing golf and Pinochle.
Ray started working in the grocery business at the age of 14 and during his career in the industry, spent 20 years with Safeway, most of them as a store manager. He played an active role in the industry by serving on food councils. In 1977, he and Dorothy bought a grocery store in Stockton, Country Club Market, and worked side-by-side as partners until retirement in 1992. With too much time on his hands, he decided to work part-time for several more years, dividing his time between Central Valley Waste in Lodi and the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department in Stockton.
Ray was predeceased by his loving wife, Dorothy in 2000, his parents, George Berg and Pauline Werner, his brother Robert Berg, and sisters Donna Larson and Alice Lucas.
He is survived by his dear companion, Annie Falos, three devoted daughters, Susan (Dwight) Holmquist, Kathleen (Tom) Goble and Carol (Curtis) McMurran, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren, his brothers Elmer and George Berg, his sisters, Erna Clifford and Shirley Spiekerman. Above all, Ray thought his greatest accomplishment and the joy of his life was the shared love of his family.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 at Noon, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Lodi with Pastor Chris Townsend officiating. At his request, burial will be private with his family. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions can be made to Emanuel Lutheran Church, 1540 W. Lodi Avenue, Lodi, CA 95242.
