Ross LeRoy Schmiedt gained entrance into Heaven on March 6, 2014 at the age of 69 after a 5-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). He was born May 28, 1944 to Gust and Dorothy Schmiedt. He attended Victor-Alpine School and graduated from Lodi High School in 1962. In 1967, he graduated from Fresno State College with a BS Degree in Agronomy. He entered the United States Air Force
that same year and in 1968 he married Susan Goth of Fresno. They lived in various places, most notably in Turkey, while serving in the AF, finally returning to Lodi in 1975.
He died at home just a few hundred yards from his childhood home in the middle of his beloved vineyards. Ross' passion was tending his vines and learning as much as possible about the current cultural practices. He continued to direct those practices from his wheelchair in collaboration with his brother, Leland, and Susan. His goal was to grow grapes that would make excellent wine. In addition to farming, he had a landscaping business. He became the first in this area to inject trees to protect them from pests and disease.
Ross was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He loved his "chat" times with others, always interested in the details of their lives. He often said he was so thankful that the disease did not take his voice first. Special thanks to Jackie, Ida, and Lyn for their compassionate care.
Throughout his illness he maintained a positive outlook and was always thankful for God's many blessings. He felt strongly that God was working out a much better plan than any of his dreams.
His most recent joys included the arrival of his two precious granddaughters, Taylor and Emily, who were a ray of sunshine to him, even in his last days as they visited with him at his bedside. An additional comfort was his "granddog," Butch who kept a constant vigil by his side.
Ross was a faithful member of Temple Baptist Church, serving in various capacities all of which he found most satisfying. The most meaningful events for him were his involvements in mission outreach especially his trips to Brazil.
Ross is survived by his wife, Susan, daughters, Catherine Schmiedt, and Sara Sauseda (Brian), granddaughters, Taylor and Emily Sauseda, brothers, Carl (Danna), Leland (Bernice), sister, Kathleen Hodge (Mike), nephews and nieces and a large extended family. He will be greatly missed, but we are confident that he is in the safe arms of Jesus.
