Thomas Francis Iturraran, 77, of Lodi passed away on January 17, after a courageous battle with mesothelioma. He was born on September 22, 1936 to the late Peter and Ciriaca Iturraran in Hudson, Wyoming as the youngest of four children. His family moved to California and settled in Lodi in 1939. Upon graduating from Lodi Union High School in 1954, Tom entered the U.S. Air Force. He served as a weapons mechanic until his discharge in 1958. On September 5, 1959, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Braun. They had two sons, Peter and Frank; Tom claimed they were the best children in the world. Tom worked at Johns Manville from 1959 to 1972. In 1967, he began a machinist apprenticeship program and eventually went to work for the California Department of Water Resources in 1972. During his 27 - year career with the DWR, Tom worked as a hydroelectric plant mechanic and he was later promoted to position foreman in 1984. Two years later he became a supervisor and retired as a superintendent in 1999. He was a long time member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and the Tracy Chiefs motorcycle club. Tom had a passion for motorcycles, old cars and machine shop practices. He loved working on projects with his sons, grandchildren and friends. Tom was most often found in his shop donning his trademark overalls. His shop was like his second home, a machinist's dream. He had it equipped with a bathroom and even a wood burning stove and recliner, making naps quite inviting. Pride of his Basque heritage was evident, with many sizes of the Basque flag and symbol adorning the shop. Though Tom was intimidating in size, he had a heart as big as the person he was. He was down to earth with a good sense of humor. His quick wit and one-liners never failed to bring a smile to your face. He will forever live in the hearts of his family and friends. "Agur Lagun Ona" ... goodbye good friend.
