He graduated from Cedar Falls High School. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 10, 1945. He met Amada Perez while they were stationed at Stewart Air Force Base in New York. They were married in 1951. They moved to California where he attended the California Highway Patrol Academy. During his tenure with the CHP he enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserve. After he retired from the CHP, work opportunities took him to Greenland, the Seychelles Islands, and Alaska. With world travel and living abroad behind him, he returned to California. He moved to Lodi in 2005. During the past eight years he enjoyed playing and teaching chess, listening to live and recorded music and was an avid reader.
