Dessie Viola Roper, of Thornton, went home to be with the Lord after a brief illness on November 19, 2013 at the age of 79.

Dessie was born to Bill and Mary Starnes in Williamsville, Missouri on June 26, 1934, the 5th of 7 children. She moved with her family to Galt, CA when she was 9 years old and attended local elementary and high schools. She married the love of her life, William Thomas (Tommy) Roper on June 2, 1952 and they made their home in Thornton, CA, where they resided for the rest of their lives. They raised two children, William Thomas Roper II and Julie Marianne Roper. In addition to her children, she enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, bowling league and playing all sorts of games with family and friends.
In her later years, Dessie spent Friday nights at Bingo with friends and was known for being very lucky. She had five grandchildren who have fond memories of time spent with their 'Ma' and 'Pa'. Her grandchildren went on to give her 13 great-grandchildren which were a particular source of enjoyment in her later years.
Dessie was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, her daughter Julie, her parents, her brothers Ed and Henry Starnes and her sisters Alice Braswell, Bertha Asher and Leoma Champlain.
She is survived by her son Bill Roper and daughter-in-law Cheryl Roper, her sister Carolyn Dick, and her grandchildren Bill (Stacy) Roper, Dallas (Jennifer) Roper, Aaron (Christina) Roper, Lonnie Harrison and Dessie (Jimmy) Winchester. She will also be missed by her 13 great-grandchildren – Addie, Georgia, Wesley, Tommy, Memphis, Millie, Morgan, Jed, Sadie, Lincoln, Julien, Julie and Jimmy.
A graveside service will be held at Galt Cemetery on Joy Drive Monday November 25 at 11:00am. It will be followed by fellowship and lunch at Galt Bible Church (801 Church Street).
