In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am, there ye may be also- John 14:2-3 On October 29th, Gordon Herr, who prepared many places as a Carpenter, entered the dwelling place prepared for him. We think his heavenly mansion is a cabin cruiser!
Gordon was born in Beaver Creek, ND on June 28, 1928 to Emanuel and Marie (Dockter) Herr. Raised on a farm, he dreamt of architecture and a life away. In 1946, at age 17, he moved to Lodi. He worked at his brother's gas station when a customer impressed by his hard work offered Gordon a job in construction. Thus began a 35 year career of residential and commercial building. He earned a Journeyman's certificate. At 28, Gordon advanced to foreman of the General Mills project and was pictured in Morrison and Knutson's magazine. He received his 60 year pin as a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.
Gordon proudly served in the Army from 1950 to 1952. He married Nancy in February 1953 and welcomed daughters Joni and Janice. A devoted family man, he built the family home, taught his children and grandchildren to love God, fish, play board games, and enjoy life. His cabin cruiser, Nailer, was a source of great joy. He valued family trips and holidays often proclaiming, "I am in my glory!".
Gordon's boating and fishing passions led him on quests to Mexico, Canada, Alaska, and the North West. Gordie delighted in fixing and building things: recently handcrafting jewelry boxes for family. He was patriotic and loved Lodi. A gregarious man, he greeted all with a smile, joke, and handshake. Gordie exercised at the gym three times weekly. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Elks and Son's in Retirement. He was a jovial, joyous man and a follower of Jesus Christ.
Left to cherish his memory are his "angel", Nancy Herr, daughters and husbands Joni (Dallas) Kort, Janice (Linc) Raverty, grandchildren Brett (Julie) Young, Carrie Young (Elmo Beck) of Stockton, Marjanna, Grant, and Clayton Raverty, Jeffrey Kort and great grandchildren Ezra and Violet Young and Natalyn Raverty, all of Lodi. Survivors also include his sister Georgina (Larry) Menke of Billings, Montana, brother Joe Herr of Yakima, Washington, and many nieces and nephews. Gordon is predeceased by his parents, brothers Allen, Lorron, Elmo, Emanual Jr., infant sister, May Flower and sisters-in-law Olga, Dorothy, and Gladys.
Gordon's family extends an invitation to the memorial service on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 267 N. Mills Ave., Lodi. Interment is private. Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home and Cemetery are handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to First Baptist Church, Hospice of San Joaquin, or .
