Joan Marie Gaines, beloved mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, entered into eternal life on October 10, 2012 at the age of 77. She was born on February 8, 1935 to Henry and Margaret Schwab in Peever, South Dakota.
Joan met Bill Gaines in 1954 while he was in the U.S. Navy stationed at Rough and Ready Island and they married that same year. She worked together with her husband at Maxwell Motors in Stockton and Lodi for 12 years. She then went on to work for H & R Block in Lodi for 23 years and retired just two weeks ago. Joan was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Being surrounded by her family is what she loved the most. Joan enjoyed cooking, gardening, golfing, reading and playing card games. She always looked forward to her gambling trips to Jackson or to the horse races!
One of Joan's greatest gifts was her time and support she gave to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their sports activities. Whether it was football, wrestling, baseball, softball, swimming or water polo, she followed each child with excitement and dedication. She and Bill were both founding members of the Tokay High School Boosters Club.
Joan lived life with authenticity, honesty and laughter and created many fond memories with her family and friends for them to cherish. She will forever be in the hearts of her four children Rod Gaines (Jaynie Tamura) of Lodi, Rock Gaines (Tina) of Lockeford, Daphne Gaines of Stockton and Rick Gaines (Kandy) of Lodi. She will also be missed by her grandchildren Rodney (Sara) Gaines, Kristen Gaines, Jennifer Gaines, Jill Gaines, Dr. Stephanie Edgerly, Gina Edgerly, Brett Edgerly, Kimandy (Bert) Bowerman, Jessica (Pete) Reed, Scott Gaines and ten great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her devoted sister, Lynn McCarty of Lodi, sister-in-law, Shirley Gaines of Ceres, one nephew and two nieces.
Joan was welcomed into heaven by her husband of 54 years and her parents.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service which will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at "Mom's House", 4817 Cosmos Drive in Stockton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Tokay High School Athletic Department, Attention Louis Franklin, 1111 Century Boulevard, Lodi, CA, 95240.
