John Parker Talbot

1931 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Shelburne, Vermont
September 5, 1931 - November 10, 2013
John Parker Talbot, 82, previously of Lodi, CA, passed away on November 10, 2013 in his home at the The Shores at Shelburne Bay.
John moved to Shelburne in May of 2012 to be closer to his daughters and their families, and he quickly made friends and enjoyed dining around town. He was the main driver and an author of a book on the pioneer families of California's Bennett Valley, and he was proud to have seen that project through to completion. He stayed current on investment issues and ideas, and continued his pursuit of California and western history, while visiting places new and familiar around Vermont and New England. He was a life-long learner and avid reader to the end.
Born in Santa Rosa, CA on September 5, 1931, the son of Leonard and Joyce Talbot, John grew up on Talbot Avenue with his older sister, Patty. He attended Santa Rosa High School and graduated from the University of Oregon. John served briefly in the Merchant Marine and later in the US Navy, based in Alameda.  Like his father, John enjoyed securities sales and he joined the firm of Hannaford & Talbot in San Francisco in the late 1950's.  In January, 1960 he married Helen Mountz of Weston, MA. They lived in San Francisco until 1965, when John had an opportunity to open a branch office in Lodi. John was deeply knowledgeable about investments and was genuinely interested in people. In 1974 John joined the San Francisco investment firm of Wulff, Hansen & Co. where he was a valued member of the firm until his passing.
Throughout his life in Lodi, John was active in a variety of community and historical organizations. His overall life philosophy was based on the belief in the value of the individual, and man's right to live in a free and unencumbered society. John was a remarkable family man, and put the happiness of his family at the top of his "to-do" list. He was a loving husband and father, and closely followed the activities and interests of his daughters and their families.
John was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Parker, his parents, Leonard and Joyce Talbot, and wife Helen. He is survived by his two daughters and their families: Sarah and Jonathan Prescott and their children, Mariah and Peer, of Wenham, MA and Ginger and Chris Williamson and their children, Jamie and Augusta of Shelburne, VT. John cared deeply for his extended Talbot family in California, and he enjoyed their shared history with roots in Bennett Valley and Santa Rosa.
A reception in memory of John's full and interesting life will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 2pm in the Great Room at the Lodge at Shelburne Bay, 185 Pine Haven Shore Road, Shelburne, Vermont.
