Reuben Gartner passed away at Lodi Memorial Hospital, June 22, 2012 at the age of 97. Reuben was born August 25, 1914, in Tyndall, South Dakota, to John and Eva (Buechler) Gartner. The family moved from Tyndall to Goodrich, North Dakota, where Reuben attended school until the 8th grade when he quit to help with the farming. In 1939, he married Alma 'Lorraine' Stroh, and they farmed for 10 years, near McClusky, North Dakota. There they attended the John's Lake Mennonite Church. On Thanksgiving Day, in 1950, Reuben and Lorraine moved to Lodi where Reuben began working for the Lodi Nut Co. He was employed there for 40 years. His love and devotion to his work kept him active, so he did not retire until age 76. Reuben enjoyed working in his yard and garden at their Eureka Avenue home, where they lived for 61 years, before moving to Ashley Place in 2011. Reuben and Lorraine attended the Vinewood Community Church, and in October, 2011, they celebrated 72 years of marriage. Reuben is survived by his wife, Lorraine Gartner; one brother, Willis (Ardella) Gartner and sister-in-law, Kay Gartner all of Bismarck, North Dakota; brother-in-law, Gene Seibel, of Lodi; two nephews, Dennis Gartner and Kelly Gartner; seven nieces, Carla Schimke, Pam Suess, Mary Lou Bergman, Becky Haag, Vonnie Gartner, Lyndell Redington, and Connie Roller. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Herbert and Harry Gartner, both of Bismarck, North Dakota; two sisters-in-law , Alvina Gartner of Utah and Velda Seibel of Lodi. Reuben when asked, "How are you doing?", would often answer, "I'm still above ground, so I must be OK!" His humor and kindness will be missed. His favorite past-times were reading his Bible, western novels, watching the Weather Channel, to keep up with the North Dakota weather, and visiting with his family and friends. The viewing will be held at Lodi Funeral Home, at 725 S. Fairmont Ave, Lodi, CA Wednesday, June 27, between 8 AM and 8 PM. A Public Committal will be at 10 AM, June 28, 2012, at Cherokee Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life service will follow at Vinewood Community Church, 1900 W. Vine St., Lodi, at 11 AM with Pastors Dwight Friesen, Rod Suess and Skip Suess officiating. Donations may be made, to the Vinewood Community Church.
