Toyokazu "Toyo" Sasaki passed away on February 10, 2014 in Lodi at the age of 94. Toyo was born on July 8, 1919 in Gardena, CA to Nobuichi and Tonoyo Sasaki. He grew up in Southern California and graduated as the valedictorian of his graduating class in San Jacinto High School. He helped his family grow onions in Lake View, CA and other vegetables in Montebello, CA until WWII. He was sent to the relocation center at Manzanar, CA and then to the Interment Camp at Tule Lake, CA. After WWII, he came to Loomis, CA and then to Acampo, CA and worked for Tom Tsutsumi. He bought a vineyard and continued to work growing grapes until he retired. In 2000, he sold his vineyard and moved into Lodi, where he continued to live until his death. Toyo enjoyed trips to Reno and Jackson and working in his garden.

His sisters June Noda of Monterey Park, CA and Betty Kadoya of Portland, OR survive him. He also has many nieces and nephews. Toyo was preceded in death by his parents, brothers – Ted and Henry, and sisters – Asako Kadoya, Mitsuko Kisaka and Sueko Tomita.
As per his wishes, a private memorial service was held on February 23, 2014 at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home with Reverend Katsuya Kusunoki officiating. If you'd like to make a donation in Toyo's memory, please send it to the Lodi Buddhist Church.
