Walter Mayer passed away peacefully at his home in Oakdale, Ca. at the age of 89. Walter was raised in Lodi, Ca. He attended and graduated from Lodi High School in 1942. Walter served as a ball turret gunner in the US Army Air Corps from 1943-1945, surviving 33 combat missions. He received 17 military awards including the Distinguished Flying Cross. After completion of military service, he attended the California Polytechnic College in San Luis Obispo, Ca. graduating with an engineering degree. Walter was preceded in death by his brother, Leonard Mayer, of Lodi, Ca. He is survived by his sister, Violet (Hal) Neu of Tucson, Az., his nephew, Michael Neu, his grandnephew, Cameron Neu, his niece, Debbie Mayer, of Lodi, Ca., and his faithful and true companion, Wanda Beltrami, of Oakdale, Ca., who shared many afternoons of dancing and years of traveling. In the end, Mr. Mayer would wisely proclaim, "So be it," and bid farewell with, "Thanks for the memory." Burial is at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella, Ca. No services.
