Dorothy J. Hargis

1922 - 2011 Obituary Condolences
Dorothy J. Hargis Obituary
Dorothy passed away in peace, after a short illness, at Lodi Memorial Hospital on January 6, 2011. Dorothy was born August 19, 1922, in Pontiac, MI to Earl and Hazel Ward, and was an only child to that marriage. Her mother had contracted TB and spent 7 years in a sanitorium when Dorothy was between 5 and 12 years old. At the age of 17, her parents' marriage ended, and she lived with her mother until her mother passed away at the age of 49. Her father had remarried and had a second family of 5 boys and 2 girls. Dorothy had met Robert J. Hargis (Bob), and they married in November, 1950. Her husband had been previously married and was the father of 2 boys (Tom and Bob) living in Stockton, CA with their mother since 1945. In July, 1958, Dorothy and Bob decided to moved to California to be closer to their sons, who by that time were married and each had a baby girl, with more to come. They lived in Stockton for a short time where Bob worked for Greyhound Bus Lines, but was transferred to Fresno, CA for a promotion. While in Fresno for 35 years, they both worked, became members of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, retired, and made many life-long friends. In September, 1993, they moved to Lodi to live out their retirement close to the family. They became members of Vinewood Community Church and again made more life-long friends in Lodi. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, who passed away on 2/3/2001; her oldest step-son, Thomas Hargis, who died on 4/28/1996; and a great-great-grandson, Andrew Curtis who died on 6/19/2010. She is survived by her step-son, Robert G. (Lynne) Hargis; 4 granddaughters, Susan Mc Anelly, Barbara Hargis, Cynthia (Larry) Potter, and Linda (Steve) Anderson; 6 great-grandchildren, Jenny Sanchez, Stephen Anderson, Robert Anderson, Thomas Hargis, Christa Zwinge, and Rebecca Kinney; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Mykle and Sophia Sanchez; five half-brothers, Doug, Joe, Cecil (Carla), and Richard Ward, all of Michigan, and Fred (Janet ) Ward of Tennessee; two half-sisters, Pat (Frank) Clark and Juanita Sanderson, both of Michigan. Dorothy had many nephews, nieces and cousins. She was very close to Sharon (Tom) Mc Conaghie, a cousin, who was more like a younger sister. Family and friends are invited to visit Wednesday, from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Lodi Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 13th, at 11:00 a.m. at Vinewood Community Church in Lodi. Committal will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Vinewood Community Church, 1900 W. Vine Street, Lodi, CA 95242. A virtual register book may be signed at www.lodifuneralhome.com where memories can be shared.
