James was born November 16, 1929. He was raised and schooled in Lompoc, CA where four generations of his family had lived. In early 1946, James joined the U.S. Navy where he was enlisted for the next 231/2 years. He retired from the military in early 1969. During his time in the Navy, he was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with a Combat "V" WWII Victory Medal, Korean Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; and several other medals. He was most proud of his Good Conduct Medal with five awards. Upon retiring from the Navy, James worked for Pacific Towboat and Salvage out of Long Beach, CA. He was a member of the IBU-SIU. After a few years of traveling he accepted a position with the Lodi Unified School District and taught at the Career Center in Lodi. He later went to work for General Mills, where he retired after 13 years as a line operator. |
James was married to Alice A. Emerson of Coos Bay, OR on November 17, 1962 in Santa Barbara, CA. They made their first home in Chula Vista, CA where James was stationed. After his military retirement they lived in Santa Barbara until 1976 when they moved to Lodi. They have three children; Scott E. Adkins, Russell J. Adkins and Alisa T. Adkins deVera; Two Grandchildren, Korynn Garcia and Anthony Garcia all living in Lodi and a sister Pat Scolari of Lompoc, CA.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Carmen (Negus) Adkins of Lompoc.
James was most happy working in his garden and fishing with his boys in tounaments.
His goal was to catch a 10lb. Large mouth bass, but settled for a 9.15lb. … close enough!
Memorial services will be held Monday, December 3rd at 11:00am at the Temple Baptist Church, 801 S. Lower Sacramento Rd., Lodi. There is no visitation and committal is private.
In lieu of flowers, he would appreciate donations to: Navy-Marine Corps-Relief Society Hdqtrs, 801 N. Randolph St., Arlington, VA 22203-1978.
