The Guest Book is expired.
Barbara was born in Walnut Grove to Ed and Beth Lyon on July 1st, 1939. She was very active in Rainbow Girls throughout her young life and carried the honor of being the State Musician for California. She moved to Galt in 1966 and soon became a permanent fixture as the pianist for the Galt United Methodist Church and played there for over 40 years.
She began her teaching career soon after, teaching first and fourth grades at Fairsite School. Barbara loved teaching and enjoyed seeing her students grow. She was recognized for her dedication in 1983 when she was named Galt's Employee of the Year. She taught at Fairsite for many years, enjoying teaching the children of earlier students.
Her piano playing extended beyond the church to the community through school Christmas programs, musical plays at the high school, weddings, funerals, Community Choirs and so much more. Barbara's music touched many many lives and will live in the hearts of her family and friends forever.
When not playing the piano, Barbara enjoyed reading, crafts, gardening and her family. She raised her three children, Kevin, Karen and Katie in Galt. She shared her love of music with her children, taking them to Walnut Grove every week to take lessons from her own piano teacher (Ada Berry). All three of her children played in the high school band. Barbara helped start the Galt High Band Boosters Club. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, Michelle, Marissa, Matthew, Harmony and Mia.
Although a breast cancer survivor, it would be cancer that sent her to the Lord. Barbara was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer on May 16th and passed just one week later. She is survived by her three children, her 5 grandchildren, her sister Janet Long, brother-in-law Jay Long, nephews Jeff and Jason, great niece Jamie and great nephews Owen and Emmett. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Bill Murphy, her parents and her nephew Jonathon.
A celebration of Barbara's life and memorial service will be held at 10:30am Saturday, June 29th at the Galt United Methodist Church.
