Shirley Lee Harkless Gillette died peacefully in her sleep Friday morning, June 28, 2013, the day before her 86th birthday. She was living with her son Jack and his wife Sue in Sacramento for the past year.
The Guest Book is expired.
Shirley was born in Monterey on June 29, 1927, a daughter of Ceyrillis F. "Jack" and Inez Ingram Harkless. She attended Monterey schools and was a proud alumnus of Monterey High, attending every reunion until her health declined in 2011. She lived throughout the Central Valley when her family was young, eventually settling for nearly 20 years in Lodi. Shirley always had a crossword puzzle to keep her busy. She was a steadfast Giants and 49ers fan, but her life centered around her children and grandchildren, and she would drop everything to be Gramma, whether it was to host dinner for a crowd, help during the birth of a new grandchild, or attend a wedding or graduation. She loved to travel and to be included in the lives of her family.
Shirley was a lovely, gentle person, with a gracious manner and a deep love for her family and friends. She is survived by four sons: Chester Gillette, Monterey; Jim Gillette [Suzan], West Linn, OR; Jack Gillette [L. Sue], Sacramento; Jeff Gillette, Carmel; one daughter, Jocelynn Gillette, Dubuque, IA; nine grandchildren: Christine Lopez, Joseph Hallberg, Priese Loera, Brian Gillette, Michael Gillette, Chelsea Hibben, Chester Knight, Chase Knight and Chad Knight; and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by a daughter in law Sue Teranishi, Sacramento; a cousin Dorothy Mobert, Monterey; and a sister in law, Joyce Mansfield [Cecil] of Los Gatos.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, a sister, and her former husband Jim Gillette.
Her family is planning a private ash dispersal for later this summer.
