George Carpenter Steedman Obituary
George Carpenter Steedman born May 23, 1912 in Berkeley, CA and died on Friday, April 17 at the age of 102. A 1934 graduate of UC Berkeley, he worked for the Alameda County Probation Department. As an officer for the juvenile court, he helped place many foster children, investigated crimes and presented evidence in court. After 38 years he retired as the head of his department.
Prior to George's retirement he joined the Berkeley Lawn Bowling Club. During his 30 years of bowling he competed in tournaments across the country with his wife (Helen), served as the club's president and managed the club's finances as the Chairman of the Memorial Fund. In his active retirement he traveled nationally and globally, attended repertory theatre, followed baseball and was a member of SIRS. At the age of 93 he moved to Lodi where he enjoyed visiting the region's many wineries. Sharp until the end, he was always interested in conversation about politics, the stock market and Giants baseball over a good cup of coffee.
George is survived by daughter Kathie Mettler (Ron), son Craig, four grandchildren, Scott Mettler (Tanya), Shelley Izquierdo (Martin), Peter Steedman (Michelle) and Andrew Steedman (Sophia), and five great grandchildren Jaedon and Trevin Steedman, Thomas Mettler, Niko and Dylan Izquierdo. His surviving sister is Margaret Schurman (Charles).
Preceded in death by parents George and Bernice, wife Helen, and brother, Robert.
