HEWETT, W.Va. — Davis Earl "Punkin" Akers, 82, of Hewett, went to be with his heavenly family Wed., April 9, 2014.
Born Nov. 2, 1931, he was a son of the late Dave and Nessell Akers. Also preceding him in death was his wife of 44 years, Marlene, and his brother, Phillip.
Earl retired after 46 years from Westmoreland Coal, where he played fast-pitch softball for many years and was known as one of the best pitchers in the state. Earl loved his family, his church and his community, ministering to countless people through his Sunday School class, visiting the sick and taking care of many funerals as a lay minister. He was the first person everyone reached out to and he always made time to provide comfort to those in need in his kind and loving way.
He will be greatly missed by wife, Mary; children, Jeri Lynn Adkins (A.T. Miller), Randy (Karen) Akers, and Pam (Rodney) Campbell; grandchildren, Randi (Roger) Hager, Brandon (Amy) Akers, Brett, Brittany and Brooke Campbell, and great-grandchildren, Holly and Alex Hager and Jada Akers. Also surviving are twin sisters, Patsy and Peggy, and brothers, Richard, Curtis, Sharol and Leon.
We were all truly blessed to have such a wonderful man in our lives.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sat., April 12, at Spencer United Methodist Church at Hewett with Rev. Roger McCauley and Harold Ray Ball officiating, and a special prayer by Richard Darnell. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens at Madison.
Visitation will begin after 6 p.m. Friday at the church.
Words cannot fully express our gratitude to Drs. Harris, Nagarajan and Grey whose expert care gave us five more years to enjoy our Dad; to our Hospice angels Sally, Laura and Paula, Boone Chapter, and to his faithful church family visitors.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made in Earl's honor to Spencer United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 290, Hewett, WV 25l08 or Hospice, 67 Main St., Madison, WV 25130.

So very sorry to hear of "Punkin's" death. I have known this gentleman for many years on the softball field. He was always Punkin and a lot never knew his real name, Davis or Earl. May the good Lord bless him on his way to glory. (Catbird)
