ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — Gerald Clarence Slone, 84, of Ormond Beach, Fla., formerly of Accoville, departed this life Tues., Jan. 14, 2014, at home surrounded by family after a long illness.
Born July 22, 1929, at West Hamlin, he was a son of the late Greely Clarence and Violet Mae Baisden Slone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Michael Eugene Slone; two brothers, Toey Slone and Mono "Buddy" Slone; two sisters Athalee Reed, and Felda Staats, and his treasured niece, Barbara Jean Swinehart.
Gerald worked at the Fanco tipple for Amherst Coal Company for more than 30 years retiring, in 1981. He was a member of the UMWA Local 5850, for which he served as an officer. Gerald loved to garden and during the growing season could be found tending to the fruits and vegetables in his garden. He could also be seen on his daily walks in and around Accoville or during several hours of the day, chatting with friends and acquaintances at the Accoville Post Office.
Survivors include his wife, Lula Sponaugle Slone; five children, Gerald Clarence Slone II of Robinette, Paul Douglas Slone and Jon Sponaugle Slone, both of Ormond Beach, Cherry Lee Rogers of Amherstdale, and Timothy Mark Slone of Augusta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Jill Marie Rogers of Daytona Beach, Fla., Beth Ann Rogers of Chicago, Ill., and Tiffany Michelle Slone and Brandon Gregory Slone, both of Davin, and with a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sun., Jan. 19, at Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill with Rev. Buddy Hager officiating.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home Chapel.
