DELBARTON, W.Va. — Just after midnight Friday, January 10, 2014, James Benny Chafin passed from this life as his only son, Jimmy, held his hand. Although Benny had been ill for some time, his condition became grave during the fall of last year. He entered Heaven and found his beloved Ruth, to whom he had been married for 61 years, waiting for him.

Born to Joe and Cassie Chafin of Newtown, West Virginia, on January 20, 1926, Benny was a devoted brother to Troy Chafin, Booker Chafin, Billy Chafin, Cleo Hammond, Ruth Coyer, and Okey Simpkins, who is the only sibling to survive him. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews: Mary Catherine Burgess, Margie Perry, Faye Dotson, Junior Vaggott, Elenor Simpkins, Tab Simpkins, Joy Chafin, Hershel Coyer, Susie Chafin, Patricia Hatfield, Will M. Smith, Michael Smith, Mitzi Smith Farley, Tommy Lowe, and Mark Lowe. Also surviving him is one grandchild, Jessica Farley Evans. A number of other relatives and friends are saddened by his passing as well.

Benny was the epitome of the hard-working coal miner, having toiled in a number of capacities for more than 40 years. A source of pride for him and for his family was his service to the Marines in the Pacific during World War II. Talented at constructing just about anything he set his mind to; Benny often helped his family and others in creative ways. After his retirement from the coal mines, he set about building apartments for his family and his sister-in-law. Devoting his days to the task, he finished in several years. Though he was retired, he was a man who believed in staying busy at whatever he found worthy to do.

Jimmy, his son, has asked that there be no flowers given in memory of his father. He asks, instead, that those who wish to memorialize Benny make an offering to The Regional Church of God, P.O. Box 236, Delbarton, West Virginia 25670.

Seeking to honor Benny's wishes, the immediate family will have a private service in his remembrance.

Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton is serving the Chafin family.
