PORTSMOUTH, Va. — W. Kendred "Ken" Albright, 84, died peacefully at Sentara Norfolk General on the morning of Oct. 22, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. His courageous battle to overcome multiple complications inspired his family and friends. A native of Hutchinson, W.Va., Ken was the son of the late Walter and Nannie Albright, and was predeceased by a brother, Billie Gene Albright of Logan.
Ken proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and retired from a successful career with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co. in 1991. After retirement, he enjoyed golf, gardening, traveling, attending the Portsmouth Community Concerts and spending time with his extended family and cherished friends. Ken was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps League, the Western Branch Masonic Lodge No. 189, and an active member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Margaret Hester Albright; two daughters, Deborah Vaughan (George) of Portsmouth and Diana Cadreau (Sam) of Naples, Fla.; a beloved grandson, James Vaughan of Portsmouth; and a brother, Ray Albright of Logan. The family would like to thank the surgeons, specialists, and nursing staff of Sentara Heart and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, who supported Ken with their compassion, humor, and acts of kindness.
The family received friends Fri., Oct. 25, at Sturtevant Funeral Home in Portsmouth. A Celebration of Life was held Sat., Oct. 26, at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, at 2 p.m. officiated by Dr. Dan Phillips Abbott. A reception followed. Private entombment was held at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
