Lester Ray Brumfield, 94, of Ed Stone Br. Rd., was born on May 5, 1919, to the late Wilburn Brumfield and Nettie Duty. He departed this life Friday, October 18, 2013, surrounded by his family at his home going to his heavenly home.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 65 years, Loraine, his oldest son Lonnie, sister Dorthal, brother Wattie, and an infant brother and sister. His grandparents Thomas and Gemimah Workman raised him.
With only a fifth grade education, he was a very intelligent man. He experienced many world changes and modernization. He had a very strong work ethic farming and providing food for many. He worked 40 years underground in the mines retiring from Westmoreland Coal Co. He was a strong "American Made" union man. His word was his bond. He was saved and baptized in his early 20's. He was faithful to the West Logan Church of God until failing health.
A wonderful Sunday School teacher, he began each day with Bible reading and finished each day with prayers. He was a UMWA member of Local 2286. He loved to hunt and always had a dog. He loved God, family, church, the farm, and was happiest when the family would all be together at home eating, sharing stories, and enjoying each other.
Survivors left to have had a loving Christian happy home are his two daughters, Janet (Roger Dale) Gore of Ed Stone Br. Rd and Judith (William) Howell of Godby Br. Rd. also two sons, Danny (Roberta) Brumfield of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. and Jerry (Linda) Brumfield of Cumming, GA, a brother John (Mary) Duty of Huntington, WV, he was the proud "Pap Paw" to grandchildren, Gregory Howell, Michael (Amanda) Brumfield, Mark (Kendra) Brumfield, Mary Beth (Robert) Ilderton, Brian (Melinda) Brumfield, Kevin (Angie) Brumfield, Rhonda (Bradley) Estep, Angie (Troy) Nalls, Melinda (Greg) Vick, Kimberly (Kody) Crawford. Also, lighting up his life were his great-grandchildren, Crystal, Garrett, Amanda, Tony, Matthew, Landon, Delaney, Peyton, McCormick, Nathan, Abby, Aiden, Kassidy, and Iziah, step grandchildren, Megan, Parrish, and Michael.
His special caregiver was his son-in-law, Roger Dale Gore who treated him like a son.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at Evans Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Rev. Paul Ray Farley, Pastor Scotty Dingess officiating and eulogy by his son Danny. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill, W.Va.
