James Newsom

CAROL STREAM, Ill. — James E. Newsom, 80, of Carol Stream, Ill., formerly of Dehue, departed this life Monday, August 19, 2013, from Johnson Health Care Center, Carol Stream, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimers.

James "Jim" was born October 21, 1932, at Dehue, a son of the late Troy and Lucy Newsom. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Dixie Marie Newsom, and one brother, Harold J. Newsom.

Survivors include one son, Daniel Scott Newsom, and one granddaughter, Abigail, both of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Eva (Jim) Adkins, of Pikeville, Ky. and Sandra (John) Lester Holman of Carol Stream; special friend, Arlene Unzeitig, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Jim was a 20-year veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service. He finished his military career in the United States Air Force, serving in the Vietnam war and Search and Rescue Missions while stationed in California.

After retirement from the military,he was employed by the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier for 17 years before retiring in 1989. Before his illness, he enjoyed walking 10 miles a day and traveling.

A memorial service will be held at Logan at a later date.
